It stars Peter Thomson as his father, Dr. James Lee Thomson and Margaret Atwood as his wife, Margaret Trudeau. It was directed by Bruce McDonald and produced by Pat Morrow and Peter Blythe Morrow.[1] The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 1982. Following a screening at the Public Theatre in London, England on June 16, 2015, a discussion was held with the film's director Bruce McDonald and one of its stars Peter Thomson. In his review in The New York Times, Vincent Canby said, "I'm sorry to report that Rush is not a very good movie. On the other hand it's never less than interesting. It's also very long, which may be a drawback for some viewers." Canby concluded: "Mr. Thomson and Mr. McDonald have given us an ambitious if not always very successful work. And if their film hasn't stirred audiences or critics in the way they must have hoped, it's certainly too interesting to ignore. It begs for discussion, debate and scrutiny."[2] Wendy Ide of Screen International wrote: "The primary appeal of Bruce McDonald's Rush is Peter Fonda's performance . . . And he delivers. This is an unabashed star turn that has him constantly on screen, making every shot count."[3] The film garnered four Genie Award nominations at the 4th Genie Awards in 1983: Best Actor (Peter Fonda), Best Actress (Olivia Hussey), Best Supporting Actor (Warren Frost) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Peter Blythe Morrow).
